Safeguarding Water in Puerto Rico

Alianza Para las Aguas Limpias (APALi)

Over 70 percent of Puerto Rico is served by water violating US health standards. The APALi project brings together the community, government, experts, and the private sector to address this critical problem.

The APALi Initiative

Safe Water Quality Network

The APALi initiative mitigates health risks from water contamination. We carry out the following educational, assistance, and outreach efforts:
1. This Website, where you will find educational material on septic systems, financing opportunities, septic tank emptying services, and contact information for Network members.

2. Educational circus theater presentations on septic systems. Contact us below to bring the show to your community or event.

3. Community workshops on the care and maintenance of our septic systems and the health of our community. Contact us below to bring the workshop to your community.

Project objectives

Expand and strengthen a Safe Water Quality Network of residents, community organizations, private sector entities, public health and environmental agencies as a driving force to carry out a massive educational campaign that mobilizes Puerto Ricans to unite and collaborate toward short and long term solutions.

Disseminate affordable, no-cost guidance, tools and options to residents for analyzing water and septic systems

Help home and building owners access public financing programs for septic system upgrades

Engage academics and health professionals to collaborate on data collection to assess the impact of contaminated water on health

Compile lessons learned from the project to facilitate the participation of residents, especially from disadvantaged communities, in promoting impactful solutions that ensure safe drinking water throughout the island.
